How would you describe your personal design style?

I like classic elegance, things that are inviting and warm. For me, those things come through in architectural details such as pillars and archways.

You stage homes to sell. On which areas do you focus?

There are five things that make a major difference: good curb appeal, a great entryway, the main living area, the kitchen and the master bedroom. The entryway is especially important. It's been said that people decide to buy a house in the first 10 seconds, so it makes a difference.

What are three things that can make a good impression in the entryway?

A beautiful table with a bright lamp, turned on. A nice, clean, colorful rug. And no clutter.

What are some tips for curb appeal, besides the obvious lawn mowing and clean driveway?

Use large containers filled with colorful flowers, no matter if it's a small or large house. The flowers should be red and yellow because they draw the eye. Hang a simple, tasteful wreath on the front door.

What should the living area look like?

Furniture should be angled to face the fireplace. You want pops of color, not a sea of beige, to make it interesting. Use solid-color accent pillows and houseplants, either real ones in very good condition or artificial ones that look real.

What can make a kitchen look more appealing to buyers?

Clear counters with no small appliances on them. I like to maybe put a big, beautiful platter on a plate stand. If there's an eating area, I set the table for two. It feels like it's set for whomever's looking at it.

How do you jazz up the master bedroom?

I go for a sanctuary look, making sure it's free from most accessories. I make the bed with fluffy pillows and sheets in light colors. I pull up the rugs - I want to make it feel as clear as possible.

You help people redesign rooms using objects they already have. How do you help arrange personal photographs?

I put them in frames that are the same color and place them either singly or in groups of three or five - never an even number.

You enjoy helping people create outdoor rooms in their back yard. What do you recommend?

Lots of lighting. My favorite thing is using candelabras. I always recommend to people that they get a few electrical outlets in the back yard. I love having a fireplace or chimenea outside because it creates a good sense of intimacy.
